Groan Men Talking

Library Customer: “Excuse me, young man…” Lightfoot: “Haáhe. How can I help you?”
Library Customer: “I’d like to return this book of Yiddish humor.” Lightfoot: “Certainly, sir. How did you like it?”
Library Customer: “Well, I suppose it’s all right. For my taste, though, it had too many egregious puns. Enough to make a fellow groan, they were so bad.”
Lightfoot: “So these weren’t the oy’s you’re looking for.” Library Customer: “May the Farce be with you.”

Of his Pun-Abridged Dictionary (1970, Scholastic), cartoonist Bil Keane said that “The pun is the number one form of humor… and nothing is lower than one.” It’s been a while since we’ve seen Lightfoot in his other natural habitat, the public library. I told the artists at Oray Studios that I had no particular idea what the client at the lending desk would look like and suggested that they could use someone in their company as a basis. They didn’t tell me who it was, but you now have a drawing of one of the folks who help make this strip what it is.
