Afraid

Lightfoot: “Theo, this isn’t something that you’re going to sort out in one night. But if you want some advice from an old Cheyenne fox, I’d suggest you ask yourself this: Do you love her?”
Theo: “I don’t think we’re ready to pick out china patterns or anything.” Lightfoot: I didn’t ask if you wanted to marry her. I asked if you love her.”
Theo: “We only really met today…” Lightfoot: “Why are you so afraid?”
Theo: “Why are you not?”

In my short story “Real Love on a Train” (the title is a play on the title of music by Tangerine Dream), one of the characters observes, “Falling in love is effortless; maintaining it requires effort, but it’s worthwhile effort.” Theo is now wondering if he dares to risk falling in love, when so much of his life seems to hang in the balance. Will this story of love end well? Given my track record as a romantic, I wouldn’t worry too much. After all, as Han Solo once said, “Hey… it’s me!”

Is this feeling real? How long will it last?

Indeed, those are questions that will take many nights (and days) to sort out.
