See You At Breakfast

Sheila: “It’s getting late, pet, so there’s a question that should be asked: Do you want me to stay the night?” Nickey: “Oh, Shee… yes, I do… and no, I don’t.”
Nickey: “You’re right: I’m still unsure about everything. I’m not sure that you should stay with me tonight. But I’m also afraid that, if you walk out that door, you won’t talk to me again.”
Sheila: “Compromise: Let me take you for brunch tomorrow. Meet me at our favorite little café, about 10:30? I promise to be there. You won’t lose me.”
Nickey: “A date for dinner, a date for breakfast, without the stuff in the middle?” Sheila: “This time, yeah… but it’s how you’ll know there’ll be a next time.”

Sometimes, when we’re uncertain, the best choice is to wait. Nickey is taking a chance, but no worries: Sheila will keep her word.

I’ve been told by some that they intend to keep this in their dating rulebook as “Sheila’s Compromise”: If in doubt, arrange to go to brunch the next day. Not only does it offer a chance to think about things further, it’s a great excuse to get brunch.
