Queer Street

Ophelia: “Well, house-mates, the monthly bills are here yet again. Time to ante up.” Lightfoot: “What’s the bite?” Caedmon: “Substantial.”
Theo: “Ouch… there goes that new video game I was hoping to afford.” Ophelia: “Times are tough, tiger.” Sheila: “Cor… much more of this, and we’ll be on Queer Street.”
Everyone looks at Sheila.
Sheila: “Being on ‘Queer Street’ is an old British phrase meaning broke.” Lightfoot: “That’s a relief. I thought you were suggesting a new means of producing income.” Caedmon: “Count me out.”

Collecting Cockney rhyming slang and British colloquialisms — especially from the Dickensian era — is a favorite pastime of mine. This observation came to me during the earliest days of the strip’s development, around 2008, and the new year seemed a good time to dust off some of the old comics I’ve been holding back for a while. I suppose this is partly explanation and partly warning; after all, I’ve got yet more stuff in the attic…
