Chauvinist Human

Lightfoot: “I think I can understand your confusion, Cora.” Cora: “I’m glad someone can. It feels racist, or speciesist or something… There must be some word for it.”
Lightfoot: “I’ve always liked ‘homo chauvinist.’ It’s completely wrong, but it sounds great.” Cora: “I see your point!”
Lightfoot: “Would it help to see another of us in human form first? I could offer that much help, at least.” Cora: “I feel ridiculous.”
Lightfoot: “It’s just human nature.” Cora: “I’ll try not to take that as an insult.”

In her fine book, Spock's World, Diane Duane depicts a genial conversation between Capt. James T. Kirk and the AI called Moira. Kirk says that he doesn't blame the computer for "playing at being human." Moira counters that human intelligence is "just electrons." She observes, "You always seemed too intelligent to be a protein chauvinist." I thank Ms. Duane for paving the way for Lightfoot's weaker jibe. Besides, "human chauvinism" is already too visible.
