Paving the Way

Theo: “Thank you for calling Last Hope Help Desk; my name is Theo. How may I assist you?” Voice on phone: “I need to register my purchase with you.”
Theo: “Certainly, ma’am. Let’s start with your ZIP code.” Voice on phone: “14043” Theo: “That’s Depew, New York, correct?” Voice on phone: “That’s the one.”
Theo: “And your street address, ma’am?” Voice on phone: “ 955 Dick Road.” Theo: “Ma’am, did you say Dick Road?” Voice on phone: “That’s right, son.” Narration bar: We’re not making this up; that’s a real street in that town.
Theo: “Nice place to live?” Voice on phone: “Several months ago, they cut off the last block to make way for a synagogue.” Theo: “Mazel tov.”

During my own help desk days, I came across a customer who did indeed live on Dick Road in Depew NY. I’ve waited years to be able to post this joke! To my knowledge, the street ends with the lower numbers of the 900 block, so this specific address shouldn’t be real. And if it is, mazel tov!

Trust me, I know it’s real. I know exactly where that is…

  • Either Theo actually likes his job, or he’s putting on one hell of a brave face.
