Chatting Her Up?

Sheila: “That film was brilliant, Nick! I’m surprised I’d not heard of it before.” Nickey: “It’s sort of a cult classic, probably more known to some groups than others.”
Both are quiet for a moment.
Sheila: “Think we should have a bit of a natter, Nick?”
Nickey: “I know what I want that to mean, but it doesn’t rhyme with any of the words I’m thinking of.” Sheila: “Don’t give up entirely, luv.”

To “chat someone up,” in British English, can simply mean to start a conversation, whether or not flirtation is involved. In Nickey’s case, it would seem that flirtation is definitely on the agenda. As for the rhyming slang, the latter matter might scatter the platter… although a flirt would flatter. Still not on Nickey’s list, I suspect.
