Yee Hah, Elijah

Sheila: “That’s not arf brilliant, that is.” Caedmon: “Something in the paper?”
Sheila: “Jewish feller down in Houston had himself quite a do over catering his son’s bar mitzvah. Did it up Texas-style with a barbeque afterward.” Caedmon: “What’s so special about that?”
Sheila: “Apparently, the rabbi pitched in. He brought the bris-kit.”
Caedmon: “Did they also have two sets of paper plates?” Sheila: “Doesn’t say…” Caedmon: “Mazel tov, ya’al.”

This is actually a true story, although no doubt without the pun. Texas is not a state with a large Jewish population (about half a percent of the total population of the state, according to a 2015 tally in the Berman Jewish DataBank), but I had friends who had attended this event in Houston. I did ask him if they had two sets of paper plates; laughing, he declined to answer. I’m doubt there’s a reference to paper plates in the Talmud, although I do suspect that Rabbi David Small (the titular character of Harry Kemelman’s series of mysteries) would be able to find something that would fit. They’re great books; enjoy them!

I’m afraid I don’t get the paper plates reference.

Part of the kosher tradition holds that a household must have two sets of dishes — one for meat, and one for dairy. The two are not supposed to mix.
