Native Learning

Narration bar: “This is Lightfoot, a Cheyenne red fox.” Lightfoot: “Haáhe.”
Narration bar: “A Native American fox from the southwestern deserts, Lightfoot is…” Lightfoot: “Nope.”
Narration bar: “I beg your pardon?” Lightfoot: “Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi are desert Indians, among others. Cheyenne have lands in the northwest and in the Texas/Oklahoma area.”
Narration bar: “Guess you’d know better.” Lightfoot: “Actually, I was born and raised in San Francisco. I just looked that stuff up on the Internet.”

Somewhere between experience and education is the Land of Lightfoot. He knows his roots, both from his Native heritage and his life in San Francisco. The fox all but grew up in the beautiful public library on Civic Center; he discovered early on that bullies aren’t allowed to shout or fight in there, and even if followed, he knew how to hide in the stacks. One of his favorite words is “autodidact," and for good reason. He has his formal education (BA in English, with an emphasis on library science), but he’s smart enough to know that what Frank Zappa said is true: “If you want to get [carnally suggestive verb omitted], go to college. If you want an education, go to a library.” As we’ll see in future strips, he works at his local library. And yes, he does speak Cheyenne, as you’ll see from time to time.
